With the continuous stream of data privacy related news such as the recent government mass surveillance NSA leak by Edward Snowden and with organisations such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) attempting to encrypt the web, it should come as no surprise that encrypted traffic is on the rise. The amount of encrypted traffic across networks is growing in size but also in terms of percentage of total traffic. There are a multitude of online products and services, many of them free, offering enhanced privacy include the TOR network, Encrypted Google and HTTPS Everywhere just to name a few.
In a recent study focused in the Asia Pacific region, Sinefa discovered a clear upwards trend among many enterprise and consumer customers.
HTTPS traffic as a total of total traffic was: January 2013 - 19.6% July 2013 - 27.4%
A steady rise of 40% in the 6 months between January 2013 and July 2013, as can be seen from the image in this article.
If the trend continues at this rate, then in July 2014 more than 50% of all traffic on the internet will be encrypted.
Sinefa will continue to monitor this trend. In the mean time, let us know your thoughts on this issue.
